As one month has passed since the conclusion of the ICC ODI World Cup, cricket enthusiasts have already shifted their focus to the development of the next Indian Premier League (IPL). Franchises are almost ready with their squad for the 2024 campaign following a mini-auction that was held in Dubai on Tuesday. It turned out to be an exciting event as for the first time in history, the Rs 20-crore mark was crossed in an IPL auction. Kolkata Knight Riders broke the bank for Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, securing his services for a staggering value of Rs 24.75 crore. Pat Cummins claimed the second-highest bid as the World Cup-winning captain joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.50 crore.
While the players were going under the hammer, social media got flooded with posts and memes referring to what was happening at the mini-auction. The signings of Micthell Starc and Pat Cummins took no time to become a trendy topic as fans could hardly imagine how far the franchises would go to acquire the World Cup-winning stars.
The reaction of Preity Zinta after CSK clinched the deal of New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell from Punjab Kings with a last-minute move became viral on social media.

Apart from those big-money deals, the auction also saw some stunning acquisitions. Talented New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who entered his maiden IPL auction with high hopes, was sold to Chennai Super Kings at an unimaginable price of Rs 1.8 crore. Wanindu Hasaranga also failed to match the expectations as Hyderabad roped in the Sri Lankan all-rounder at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.
Some uncapped Indian cricketers also managed to create a buzz at the 2024 IPL auction. CSK purchased UP-born batter Sameer Rizwi for Rs 8.4 crore after an intense bidding war with Gujarat Titans. Former Punjab Kings batter Shahrukh Khan is set to begin a new journey with GT, joining the 2022 IPL champions for Rs 7.4 crore. Among the unsold players, the most highlighted name was Steve Smith, who last played in the 2021 IPL, representing Delhi Capitals.
