Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the state election commissions have published the final electoral rolls. The data analysed by News18 shows that when compared to 2019, in at least five states – Delhi, Bihar, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, and Andhra Pradesh – there are more voters in the 18-19 age group than in 2019 when the previous parliamentary elections took place.
Women voters continue their dominance in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and have outnumbered men in Manipur’s electoral rolls this time.
The special summary revision of electoral rolls has been issued by the state chief electoral officers (CEOs) with reference to January 1, 2024.
In Delhi, against the 97,000 voters between the age of 18 and 19 years registered in 2019, there are 1.47 lakh this time. In Andhra Pradesh, the number has gone up from 5.39 lakh to 8.13 lakh, and in Bihar, it has jumped from 5.79 lakh in 2019 to 7.79 lakh in 2024.
In Karnataka, it is an upswing from 7.12 lakh to 10.34 lakh while in Uttarakhand, the figure has increased from 85,673 to 1.29 lakh. In Tamil Nadu, the number of voters in the age group of 18-19 years has dropped between 2019 and 2024 – from 8.98 lakh to 5.26 lakh. Here’s a look at the numbers from these states:
Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, the dominance of women in the electoral rolls continues. There were 5.91 crore voters in 2019, including 2.92 crore male and 2.98 crore female voters. This time, the final electoral roll has 6.18 crore voters, including 3.03 crore male and 3.14 crore female voters.
The number of voters from the third gender has increased to 8,294 this time from 5,472 in 2019.
The Shozhinganallur assembly constituency continues to hold the highest number of voters at 6.60 lakh. As per the state CEO, there are 3,480 overseas electors in the final roll with 71 added in this special summary revision period.
Manipur
In Manipur, the number of women voters has increased significantly this time from 2019. Five years ago, the state had 19.30 lakh voters – 9.93 lakh men and 9.90 lakh women.
As per the final rolls published on Monday, the state has 20.26 lakh electors – 9.79 lakh men and 10.46 lakh women.
The number of voters from the third gender has also increased significantly this time – from 26 in 2019 to 239 in 2024.
Delhi
The total number of voters in the national capital has risen from 1.36 crore in 2019 to 1.47 crore this time.
The number of male voters has increased from 75.56 lakh to 79.86 lakh while that of female voters has risen from 61.38 lakh to 67.30 lakh in this period.
There has been a significant increase in the number of voters in the third gender category – from 93 in 2019 to 1,176 in 2024.
The state’s gender ratio of voters has improved from 812 in 2019 to 843 this time.
Bihar
The state had 7.06 crore voters in 2019, including 3.73 crore men and 3.32 women. This time the numbers have risen to 7.64 crore voters – 4 crore men and 3.64 crore women.
There has been a drop in the number of voters in the third gender category – from 2,406 in 2019 to 2,290 in 2024.
The state’s electoral roll gender ratio has improved to 909 this time from 892 in 2019.
Uttarakhand
Up from 76.28 lakh voters in 2019, the state has 82.43 lakh voters in 2024.
The number of voters in all the categories has increased between 2019 and 2024– men from 39.84 lakh to 42.70 lakh, women from 36.43 lakh to 39.72 lakh, and those in the third gender from 203 to 286.
Karnataka
As per the state’s 2024 final electoral rolls, there are 5.37 crore voters, up from 5.03 crore in 2019.
The number of male voters has gone up from 2.54 crore to 2.69 crore since the last Lok Sabha polls while that of women has increased from 2.48 crore to 2.68 crore.
Andhra Pradesh
The state, with 4.07 crore voters, has continued to see more women electors than men.
As per the 2019 final electoral rolls, the state had 3.69 crore voters – 1.83 crore men and 1.86 crore women. This time, out of the 4.07 crore voters, 2 crore are men while 2.07 crore are women.
The state has reported a drop in voters from the third gender – 3,761 in 2019 to 3,481 in 2024.
The term of the Lok Sabha is ending in June 2024. In 2019, the elections were announced on March 10. Polling was done in seven phases between April 11 and May 19 and counting of votes took place on May 23.
