Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has been in the news of late. His recently-released film Animal has been garnering attention due to its controversial scenes and dialogues. In a recent interview, Sandeep discussed the rebellious kiss between Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna’s characters in Animal, portraying it as an act of defiance against their families. He also stated that featuring inter-caste relationships in his three films — Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Animal —wasn’t a deliberate choice. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Sandeep Vanga mentioned observing many Telugu and Tamil families in Delhi, expressing a liking for inter-region and inter-caste marriages. Regarding the kiss and its portrayal in Animal, he explained that the accompanying rock song adds a sense of recklessness as if the characters are vocalising their rage with an element of negligence.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga further explained the kissing scene, stating, “After portraying his actions in school and the family dynamics, I envisioned him sitting, as if he had already heard a lengthy conversation from her family. The audience joins in at the end of it. The direction was clear: ‘You’ve been enduring this for 10 minutes, knowing they won’t comprehend your explanations, so let’s deliver something unexpected.’ After that moment, silence prevails.”
Addressing the portrayal of female characters in his films, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, in the same interview, refuted claims of misogyny in his movies and strongly criticised his critics. He argued that only a small portion of the broader audience dislikes his films and provided explanations for scenes that sparked controversy. Despite the backlash, Animal has surpassed Rs 850 crore globally, making it the third-highest-grossing Indian movie of the year and the highest-grossing A-rated Indian film to date.
Bobby Deol, earlier, revealed that his character in Animal (Abrar) had a kissing scene with the film’s hero, Ranvijay (Ranbir Kapoor). Sandeep Reddy Vanga opted to remove the scene in the editing process.
