Prashanth Neel Reveals The Reason Behind Salaar And KGF’s Dark Themes: 'I Have OCD'
In an interaction with film critic Baradwaj Rangan, Prasanth Neel revealed that it was his OCD aka Obessissive Compulsive Disorder that pushed him toward creating films that are visually dark and grim.

Film director Prashanth Neel lets his talent shine through his work. And the KGF franchise bore evidence of that. With his films bringing in the bucks and getting appreciated by the masses and critics, Prashanth Neel has his eyes on one thing — to become the master of his art. The director’s upcoming project Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire has already piqued the interest of movie enthusiasts, thanks to the visually gripping trailer. Starring Prabhas in the lead, the trailer has grabbed the eyeballs for its dark themes, resembling the previous KGF films. Now, in a recent interview, Prasanth Neel spilled the beans on why he chooses dark colour palettes for his movies.

In an interaction with film critic Baradwaj Rangan, Prasanth Neel revealed the reason behind making films that are visually grim and dark. The director admitted that it was his OCD aka Obessissive Compulsive Disorder that pushed him toward creating dark themes. “The reason why KGF and Salaar look like that is that I have an OCD. I don’t like to wear clothes with too much colour in them. I think it’s just a reflection of my personality on the screen," he said. The director added that although cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda shoots the film sequences with the grey colour palette in mind, he does not always “agree" with the concept. “I have started to realize that it’s probably a very good thing or a very bad thing," Prashanth concluded.

During the conversation, Prashanth Neel disclosed that he was aware of the discussions about Salaar’s uncanny resemblance to KGF. But, he justified his opinion claiming that the Prabhas-starrer revolved around a story that was meant to shoot in a dimly-lit environment. “We wanted it to be gritty. Though it was starting to replicate a little bit of what I did in KGF, I still stuck with it because it was going with the drama of the movie. I did not want to change that because of the opinions. (The dark visual tone) goes with the mood of the story," he explained.

Apart from Prabhas, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in an important role alongside Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu, Bobby Simha, Shreya Reddy, Easwari Rao, and Dayanand Reddy. The epic action thriller will premiere on the big screens on December 22, a day after the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s much-anticipated film Dunki on December 21.
