Navya Naveli Nanda recently made her runway debut at L’Oréal Paris’ show during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. Seeing as Navya is the granddaughter of the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, her privilege to afford these opportunities is always highlighted when her achievements are talked about. In a recent interview, Navya addressed this and spoke about the legacy of her surname.
Talking to India Today, Navya said, “People usually keep talking about my last name and legacy and I love reminding people that everyone has a last name. It is not just my responsibility to live up to mine but everyone has a last name that means something that demands value and respect.”
Earlier this month, Navya addressed the privilege she has grown up with due to her surname in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar India. She said, “I’ve never shied away from accepting that I come from a lot of privilege. I’ve had a lot of advantages and opportunities in life that not many people have. For me to say I was able to start my own business at 21 is a very privileged thing, because not a lot of other people have that kind of access to do something like that.”
Navya added that it is not only important to acknowledge privilege but also “be responsible for it and ensure it’s not just spent on one person”. “We all have different forms of privilege, and sharing it is really important,” she added.
Navya Naveli Nanda, like her mother Shweta Bachchan has stayed away from the Bollywood dream of becoming an actor. Instead, Navya is an entrepreneur and a podcaster. She often addresses social issues like women’s education through her initiative Project Naveli.
