A courier delivery boy was knocked to death by a speeding car that was being driven by a 21-year old man in Mumbai’s Andheri on Thursday. The accused who is a student has been arrested by the police in a case of drunk driving.
The crash occurred on September 7 at around 11.30 am. The incident was narrated to the police by an eyewitness, Suresh Harijan, who was working with his colleagues at a construction site near to the accident spot. They allegedly spotted a “speeding” car run over a pedestrian who was crossing the road. On rushing to the crash site, Harijan and his colleagues saw that the victim had passed out.
The victim was identified as Paresh, a bachelor who was in his mid-forties, police said.
As per a Times of India report, the accused, Chirag Lade who was driving a car that belonged to his father’s friend, was booked for negligence and drunk driving. He was produced before a magistrate court but was later released on bail.
In his statement to the police, the eyewitness said that they spotted the car and saw a youngster and his friend stepping out of it. “We lifted the victim into the car and the youngster (Lade) drove him to Holy Spirit Hospital, Andheri (E) where the doctors pronounced the victim dead before admission”, he added.
The accused, a resident of Andheri East was taken into police custody and he revealed that he consumed few drinks at his friend’s place before sitting behind the wheel. He was also sent for a medical examination before being produced in court, in connection to the case.
Last month, a woman from Vadodara was booked by the city police for drunk driving and alleged misbehaving with police personnel. The woman, who was driving under the influence of alcohol had hit another vehicle near Gokul party plot on Vasna road.
A video of the incident later went viral in which the woman can be seen abusing and trying to hit the cops on the road.
