Mumbai reported zero coronavirus deaths on Sunday for the first time ever since the pandemic struck the country in March 2020. The city, which has been the worst-hit during both the waves, logged 367 new cases, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai said. The metropolis had reported its first coronavirus positive case on March 11, 2020, and its first death six days later on March 17 that year.
BMC’s municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal hailed the development, saying: “This is great news for all of us in Mumbai. As MC, MCGM, Mumbai, I salute Team MCGM for their spectacular performance. I also profusely Thank Team Media for its unflinching support and trust in Team MCGM. Let us all keep the mask on our face and let every citizen of Mumbai get vaccinated if some of us haven’t yet! I appeal to everyone to help us keep Mumbai safe.”
He also added that 97% of the eligible population in the city have received single dose of the vaccines, while 55% are fully jabbed now.
Mumbai’s caseload has now reached 7,50,808 and death toll 16,180. A statement from the civic health department said that 518 patients recuperated during the day, pushing the recovery count to 7,27,084. A total of 28,697 tests were carried out, which took the overall test count to 1,09,57,392.
There are 5,030 active coronavirus cases in Mumbai at present. Its recovery rate is 97 per cent, while the case doubling rate is 1,214 days. The overall growth rate of coronavirus cases from October 10 to 16 is 0.06 per cent.
At the height of the pandemic’s second wave, Mumbai saw an exponential rise of Covid cases and deaths, with over 11,000 infections being reported in a single day. The city had recorded the highest 11,163 cases on April 4, 2021 and most number of deaths at 90 on May 1 this year. The state overall has seen a steady rise in the number of infections in the past months since the second wave.
On Saturday, Mumbai reported 319 new cases and three deaths, taking the caseload to 7,51,293 and the number of fatalities to 16,180. Meanwhile, Mumbai division had seen 582 cases and five deaths, which raised the count of infections in the region to 16,91,183 and the toll to 35,395, the department said.
However, with major restrictions lifted in Maharashtra, health minister Rajesh Tope had said that the state expects a surge in coronavirus cases after Diwali. The state health minister said that the preparations are on full swing to meet any surge of a third wave.
“We fear a surge or some spike will be seen after Diwali. We have opened up most facilities in the last two months and there is a strong possibility that a surge will follow,” Tope said, Times of India reported.
Dr Shashank Joshi, member of Maharashtra Covid task force and renowned Mumbai-based endocrinologist said that there is a possibility of ‘bilip’ post Diwali, but it is unlikely to be a third wave.
Overall state figures
Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 1,715 new coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, taking the state’s infection tally to 65,91,697, while 29 deaths pushed the toll to 1,39,789, the health department said. A total of 2,680 patients recuperated during the day, which took the recovery count to 64,19,678, it said. The state’s recovery rate is 97.39 per cent and the fatality rate is 2.12 per cent.
With 1,10,465 tests being conducted on Sunday, the overall test figure of the state rose to 6,10,20,463. There are 28,631 active cases in Maharashtra at present.
Pune division had 528 fresh cases, Kolhapur division 116 cases, Aurangabad division 25 cases and Latur division 44 cases, the health department said. Akola division reported five cases, but Akola and Amravati districts as well as the two cities did not report a single case on Sunday. The division did not report any death. Nagpur division witnessed six new cases, but not a single death. The coronavirus figures of Maharashtra are as follows: Positive 65,91,697, death toll 1,39,789, recoveries 64,19,678, active cases 28,631, total tests 6,10,20,463.
