For generations of Mumbaikars, the Double-Decker bus has been more than just a mode of transportation; it has been an inseparable part of their lives. For an astounding 86 years, these iconic buses elegantly traversed the bustling streets of our city, leaving indelible memories in the hearts of all who had the privilege to ride them.
The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) authority shared the news that the last day of service for these non-air-conditioned double-decker red buses would be on the route between Agarkar Chowk and Seepz bus station. In a touching gesture, BEST arranged more than a dozen trips along this route, allowing the public to relive their cherished memories one last time.
The open-deck double-decker buses will also be discontinued from the first week of October onwards. However, BEST, the civic transport and electricity provider, has confirmed plans to procure new open double-decker buses, continuing the tradition in a modern avatar.
To honor the legacy of this iconic vehicle, a heartfelt farewell ceremony is set to take place through ‘Aapli Best Apapachachashtya.’ Mumbai’s passengers, bus enthusiasts, and the general public are invited to join this emotional event. It will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Agarkar Chowk, Andheri East, starting at 5:30 PM.
This ceremony will pay tribute to the countless memories, stories, and journeys shared by Mumbaikars who have ridden these double-decker buses over the years. It’s a final salute to an iconic symbol of Mumbai’s past, bidding farewell with gratitude and nostalgia.
