Mumbai won a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title, beating Vidarbha by 169 runs on the final day of the 2024 season. Chasing a daunting 538-run target Vidarbha put up a commendable fight with skipper Akshay Wadkar scoring a hundred but Mumbai spinners ensured Vidarbha were bowled out for 368.
This was Mumbai’s first title victory eight years after winning the title under Aditya Tare in 2015-16 season. Vidarbha, on the other hand, playing their third Ranji final, tasted defeat for the first time in a summit clash.
Youn upstart Musheer Khan was the star performer for Mumbai with a brilliant second innings century of 136 runs from 326 balls while Shreyas Iyer played his part with a 95, which was the bedrock for Mumbai’s second innings total of 418, helping Mumbai set Vidarbha a mammoth target of 538 runs.
But Vidarbha did not go down without a fight. Karun Nair made 74 and then skipper Akshay Wadkhar (102) and Harsh Dubey’s (65) knock made Mumbai sweat a bit, but spinner Tanush Kotian’s scamp of Wadkar sealed the deal for Mumbai.
Kotian finished the final with a match haul of seven wickets. Shardul contributed with the bat in the first innings with a crucial knock of 75 off 69 balls in Mumbai’s first innings. Musheer rolled his arms over in the second innings claiming the crucial wickets of Vidarbha’s No.3 and 4 – Nair and Aman Mokhade.
