During the Golden Globes Awards pre show, Margot Robbie expressed her excitement over Lady Gaga taking over the role.

Margot Robbie was truly stunning in her portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, but now it’s time she handed over the baton to another actress. Lady Gaga has been roped in to play the iconic character in Joker: Folie á Deux. While the excitement of the release of this film is quite high, recently, OG Harley Quinn shared her views about Lady Gaga stepping into her shoes.

During the Golden Globes Awards pre-show, Margot Robbie, in conversation with Variety, expressed her excitement over Lady Gaga taking over the role. She exclaimed, “She’s going to crush it! She’s going to be amazing. I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for a surprise when I see the movie.”

Earlier, Margot Robbie told the publication that she “always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Margot Robbie first essayed the role of Harley Quinn in the 2016 DC’s Suicide Squad movie. Her portrayal of the character was so captivating that the studio decided to bring her back for the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad. Furthermore, she also starred in a spinoff film, Birds of Prey, that focused on Harley Quinn.

In August 2022, Lady Gaga revealed her casting in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux on social media, uploading an animated video featuring her and Joaquin Phoenix’s silhouettes set in the classic background tune.

In April 2023, the makers finished filming and announced the same in social media with few character stills. One photograph shows Lady Gaga looking into the camera while wearing a distressed look, while another shows Joaquin Phoenix in full makeup and costume, bending his head to the right while seated. “That’s a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom, Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together,” read the caption. Joker: Folie á Deux is set to be released in October this year.
