Maharashtra man, his wife and their granddaughter were butchered to death with hammer and knife by his sons and other villagers. Those involved in murder alleged that the man’s practice of black magic led to illnesses and deaths in the village.
According to a report in India Today, the couple’s son initially filed a complaint about the incident. However, as the investigation progressed, police discovered that the couple’s three sons, son-in-law and five other people allegedly carried out the murder.
The breakthrough came when confidential information suggested that the villagers suspected the man’s involvement in black magic, the report stated.
A senior police official was quoted as saying: “The police got a tip from Gundapuri village that the person who died, Devu Kumoti, was thought to be a local priest practising black magic. People believed his actions caused illnesses and deaths. However, a police investigation found that those who died had serious diseases like cancer.”
Due to suspicions that Devu Kumoti was practising black magic, which villagers believed was causing deaths, they pressured his sons and son-in-law to ‘eliminate’ the man, the police was further quoted.
Their ten-year-old granddaughter was present during the attack on Devu Kumoti and his wife. As she was sleeping, the accused killed her, fearing she might reveal their involvement in the murder, IT quoted the police as saying, adding that all the nine accused involved have been arrested.
