INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN 2023: Villages were the earliest settlements made in history, by ancient tribes. Women in villages, worldwide, form a significant percentage of the agricultural labour. Their involvement not only ensures our food security, but also positively impacts our environment and natural resource management. To honour all rural womenfolk worldwide, the United Nations observes International Day of Rural Women, annually, on October 15. Below, we look at the theme, history, significance of the day, how to celebrate it and share some relevant quotes.
International Day of Rural Women 2023: Theme
The theme of this year’s celebration of International Day of Rural Women is, “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All.” The theme highlights the contribution of all rural women and girls, including indigenous and tribal women who make up on average, upwards of 40 percent of agricultural labour in developing nations. They sow seeds, harvest the crops, are involved in processing and preparation of the food grains, and distribution.
As per the International labour Organisation (ILO) in its March 2018 report, however, rural women receive disproportionate payment for their services as farmers, wage earners and entrepreneurs, compared to men and urban women. Many rural girls from poor communities don’t receive education and get married off while they are still children.

On October 15, 2008, International Day of Rural Women was observed for the first time.
