At the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, comedian Chelsea Handler playfully roasted her ex-boyfriend, fellow comedian Jo Koy, in her monologue. Known for her sharp humour, Handler targeted various celebrities, with Koy being a prime subject. She humorously referred to Koy’s Golden Globe monologue, where he credited his writer for the bad jokes and took credit for the successful ones. In a lighthearted manner, Handler also confessed her attraction to older men. She even gave a humorous nod to Martin Scorsese, who, although not in the audience, received a special mention during the awards show.

Chelsea humorously expressed her affection for Scorsese and stated that she would “toss him around like a little Italian meatball.” However, the following punchline, “Thank you for laughing at that. My writers wrote it,” received a thunderous response from audience members, including Will Ferrell, Bill Hader and Pedro Pascal. Her comment came after Koy’s hosting stint at the Golden Globes, where he faced difficulties garnering laughs during his monologue.

Comparing celebrities to marshmallows, he humorously stated, “Lots of marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we fu**ing laugh at ourselves? I got a feeling none of you moth****ckers watched it and I’m kinda happy. It feels good to live in this country. We get to say what we want to say. Don’t be apologetic about it at all.”

Meanwhile, during her hosting duties at the 29th Critics Choice Awards, Chelsea Handler acknowledged and celebrated the achievements of women in various fields, citing examples such as the success of the Barbie movie at the box office, Taylor Swift and Beyonce’s successful tours and Gwyneth Paltrow’s involvement in a ski trial.
