Manna Dey is a renowned Indian playback singer, music director and musician who has recorded 3,047 songs in his career spanning over five decades. He is best known for songs like Yeh Dosti, Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli, Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi and many more. Among several superhit songs, Ek Chatur Naar from the film Padosan is still cherished by many music enthusiasts around the world. But do you know that the legendary music composer once refused to sing this song?

Padosan is one of the superhit films starring Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Kishore Kumar and Om Prakash in the lead roles. It was released in 1968. Ranked among the top films of Bollywood, the film became a super hit due to the performances of the lead actors and the soundtrack. Chatur Naar was one of them. Many singers try to create the same magic which Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey did with this film but many don’t know that Manna Dey initially refused to sing the song at first. Yes, the song filmed by Kishore Kumar and Mehmood had some funny words, due to which Manna Dey refused to sing. Manna Dey said that he cannot joke with music. Some words were changed for him, but when Kishore Kumar sang his part, Manna Dey did not like it. It is said that he did not sing those lines in this song which he did not like. Despite disagreements, this song became one of the evergreen songs.

Manna Dey was born in 1919 in Kolkata. Born in a Bengali family, Manna’s real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey. While studying at the Scottish Church College, he participated in wrestling and boxing. His father wanted his son to become a lawyer. But, Manna Dey always had a passion for music. His uncle Krishnachandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan helped him.

Manna De came to Mumbai with uncle. He worked with many music directors from 1939 to 1942. He got his big break with the film Tamanna released in 1942. He sang ‘Jaago Aayi Usha’ in collaboration with famous singer Suraiya. He first sang a solo song for the film Ram Rajya in 1943. The singer was a huge fan of Rajesh Khanna because he believed that the actor used to perform best in the songs. The singer breathed his last at the age of 94 on October 24, 2013.
