Pakistani singer Taher Shah has all of a sudden emerged as an internet sensation with his video ‘Angel’ going viral and enjoying the attention of viewers from all over the world.
Donning a purple kaftan and swinging his long tresses in the air with a tiara on his head, Taher was the unlikely star who rose to popularity within no time because of his bizarre video suggesting ‘mankind is a beautiful angel’. Till now the video has amassed over 1 million views.
The success of Angel proves that ‘so bad that it’s good’ has a special place in the world of internet.
Just like Kim Kardashian’s nude selfies, a strong dose of quirkiness works wonders for millions of net addicts. YouTube is full of videos, which consists of clippings from boring duds that evokes laughter each time it is played.
Taking advantage of this trend, Taher Shah released his video knowing well that bizarreness sells like hot cake.
This has emerged as the most shared video on Facebook and Taher Shah was the trending personality on Twitter. Troll knives were out in no time as Shah was pitted against India’s very own self-appointed God man Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insan, who is the ever-green star of Twitter.
Any publicity is good and thus the YouTube video released on April 8 made Shah made him popular across the globe, so much so that it managed to invite the attention of British and American media. Washington Post called him a ‘bizarre YouTube hero’, wondering how his song with funny lyrics and ordinary music become such a big hit.
Hilarious posters on Taher, cartoon strips on his journey to funny comments on his gown, tiara and long curly traces are the proof of Shah’s popularity. Sindh-born Taher Shah is famous for his music mostly with English lyrics. In 2013, he had release a video titled ‘Eye to Eye’ which was equally bizarre, but, the singer believes in “taking every criticism positively".
The little chubby boy in ‘Angel’, who awkwardly looks at Taher in the video, is none other than Shah’s own son, while the woman in white gown is reportedly his wife.
Riding high on the new found fame, Shah is making the most of it. Armed with a battery of staff, Shah’s five managers reportedly ‘handle’ his work. He has been interviewed by several news channels while his team has been making the popular chat show hosts wait for their turn to interview him.
While the world was busy taking a dig at the mellifluous la la la la, Shah penned a blog explaining the ‘ideology’ behind his video. His intentions are ‘clear’ as he writes: “In my song the highlighted message is the same that all human beings should exchange ‘Angel’ like love and emotions while being ‘Angel’ like humans."
