Sonakshi Sinha And Zaheer Iqbal Share Wedding Vows Under Special Marriage Act? What We Know
The civil marriage ceremony was conducted in Mumbai at Zaheer’s residence, in the presence of the couple’s close ones.

The media, as well as the Internet, is rife with reports and updates on the wedding of Sonakshi Sinha with her longtime boyfriend, Zaheer Iqbal. The lovebirds tied the knot on June 23, under the Special Marriage Act, amidst a lot of talk about their interfaith union. So, what exactly is the Special Marriage Act?

After seven years of being together, Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal got married this Sunday. The couple chose not to follow their respective customs and completed their vows through the Special Marriage Act. The civil marriage ceremony was conducted in Mumbai at Zaheer’s residence in the presence of the couple’s close ones.

As per the information on various websites, the Special Marriage Act of 1954 gives Indian citizens the right to enter a marriage union regardless of their religion. The law was established to carry out unions that do not aim to follow the customs of their respective faith. It is applicable everywhere across the country except Jammu and Kashmir and can also be followed by Indians living outside the country.

It protects the rights of both husband and wife, under the judicial system of the country. Both the man and woman involved are given equality, regardless of the faith they belong to.

A 19th-century piece of legislation was used as the originator of the law. According to more information, couples opting to marry under this law have to provide a notice to the Marriage Officer and all the required documents, 30 days before the wedding date. The procedure can be carried out online but for the registration, the couple has to appear at the marriage office.

In an earlier media interaction, Iqbal Ratansi, Zaheer Iqbal’s father shared the statement, “It will have neither Hindu nor Muslim rituals. It will be a civil marriage.” Furthermore, he refuted the rumours that Sonakshi would be converting. He said, “Theirs is a union of hearts and religion has no role to play whatsoever.”
