The charisma and power that Queen Elizabeth II, who led the UK from 1952-2022, carried with her was unique, just like her. And many tried to paint that magic onscreen, through movies and web series. Over the years, several fiction projects have been made all over the world, portraying Queen Elizabeth as the legend she was.

Here, we flip through the pages of the history of cinema and read about the actresses who tried their best to play the role of the British monarch on the screen.

1.Claire Foy on The Crown

Actress Claire Foy’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in the web series The Crown is termed one of the best till today. She won an Emmy Award for her memorable performance as a much younger version of the Queen. Her role showcased the monarch’s early years of ruling the UK, her nascent marriage to Prince Philip and the birth of her four children. The role of Prince Philip was played by Matthew Smith in the series.

2. Olivia Colman on The Crown

Olivia Colman, in The Crown, depicted the Queen’s life in her 40s, 50s, and 60s. She also won an Emmy for showcasing the life of the monarch like no other. The Oscar-winning actress featured in the third and fourth seasons of the series.

3. Helen Mirren

Perhaps, no one has depicted the life of Queen Elizabeth onscreen like actress Helen Mirren. She also won an Oscar for her performance as the monarch in the critically acclaimed 2006 film The Queen. The film revolved around the deal between the Queen and her Prime Minister Tony Blair in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death. She also reprised her role in the Broadway production – The Audience – and earned the Laurence Olivier Award for her work.

4. Emma Thompson in Playhouse Presents

Emma Thompson, in an episode of Playhouse Presents, portrayed the Queen in a real-life incident – when an intruder had entered Buckingham Palace to chat with the monarch while her guard was away.

5. Sarah Gadon in A Royal Night Out

But apart from all that, Queen Elizabeth was the top choice of filmmakers to portray herself in movies or commercials. In 2012, she played herself in an advertisement for the London Olympics.
