In a recent update, actor Premkumar has been given the temporary charge of the Chairperson of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.
This decision has been taken in the context of Ranjith’s resignation who was the previous chairperson of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. He had to step down on August 25 following the allegations of inappropriate behaviour levelled against him by the Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra.
The Department of Culture’s Joint Secretary R Santosh issued the order giving Prem Kumar who is currently the Vice Chairman of the Film Academy, the temporary charge of the Academy Chairman.
However, initially, the academy had considered veteran director Shaji N Karun to fill the vacancy. But the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) demanded that Beena Paul be appointed as the chairperson. To address the differing views, the government resolved the matter by assigning Premkumar the temporary charge which was the first time a non-director has supposed the chairmanship of the film academy. Prem Kumar now faces key responsibilities, including supervising the state film awards distributions, the cinema assembly, and the Kerala International Film Festival.
However, Premkumar joined the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy as vice Chairman in 2022. He has made over 100 moves and has contributed in 18 lead roles. His most recent appearance was in the film CID Ramachandran Retd. SI was released earlier this year. Nevertheless, his temporary appointment is expected to provide the important leadership and vision until a permanent replacement can be found. As the academy begins this new chapter, all eyes will be on Premkumar’s efforts.
However, the Kerala Police have recently registered two sexual assault cases against film director Ranjith. In Kozhikode, a young male actor accused Ranjith of sexual assault and again in a separate incident, Bengal actress Sreelekha Mitra complained to him accusing him of misconduct during a film project discussion in 2009. Meanwhile, the ex-chairperson has moved to the Kerala High Court seeking protection from arrest in the cases lodged against him.
