We have seen him as a VJ, a school student, a drummer, a travel guide and recently as a prisoner of war. In a career spanning over a decade, Purab Kohli has experimented with all kinds of roles in the industry. From anchoring shows to being a part of it and eventually being part of films, the actor has never shied away from a challenge. In his latest film, Noor, Purab plays a photo-journalist.
Based on the book by Pakistani journalist-writer Saba Imtiaz titled Karachi You Are Killing Me, Noor, is a film about a journalist and her misadventures in life. Talking about his role to News18.com Purab says, "My character in the film comes at a very crucial time. I can't say much about it considering the moment it is introduced at in the film - but all I can say is that the role is very important in Noor's narrative."
Sonakshi Sinha will be seen playing the clumsy journalist in the film who takes up a serious role to give her life some meaning. Calling Sonakshi an extremely professional actress, Purab says, "Well, in the film I've just shot with Sonakshi, considering her brief angle with Ayan (Purab's character). Sonakshi is a very diligent, professional and a good actor and I really enjoyed my time at the sets. I was shooting simultaneously for POW which required an intense state of mind. However, people on Noor sets made it easier for me to get out of Sartaj's character. It was a joy working with Sonakshi. "
The audience has been raving about Purab's role in hard-hitting war drama POW: Bandi Yudd Ke. About his preparation for such a challenging role, Purab says, "Playing Sartaj was a difficult yet delightful challenge. Playing a man who has lost so much because of the war was a trauma for me as an actor as well. POW was pretty hardcore and it was a relaxing change to come to Noor's set and actually romance somebody."
Purab, who has been part of commercial films as well as art house cinema in the past, argues that the lines are blurring. "The definition of commercial cinema has changed over the last few years. We would think of a Neerja as an unconventional film, non-commercial film but it has done better business than many of the so-called commercial films. What really defines a commercial film is now very broad and open. We are looking for interesting films. Two best films of last year, Dangal and Neerja, didn't actually fall into the so-called formula bracket yet did so well. "
On National Award controversy surrounding Akshay Kumar's win, Purab says, "I don't actually know what the controversy is all about as I haven't watched Rustom. However, when the awards were announced I thought Akshay got it for Airlift and Rustom, both. Undoubtedly, he is an extremely talented actor and whatever he wins is on his own. I can't judge his win because I am not aware of his work in Rustom." Purab worked with Akshay in last year's hit film Airlift.
From My Brother Nikhil to Jal and now Noor, Purab has always steered away from formula films. "After experimenting with character role I would love to do a romantic-comedy. It would take off the steam, definitely. "
The actor who has been busy with Noor and POW now plans to spend some time with his infant daughter and fiancée before getting back on his toes and play another intense character.
