'No Wonder The World Believed Triangle Was For Real': Rekha on Silsila With Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan
Rekha, in a 2006 interview, reflects on her iconic role in Silsila with Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, revealing why the on-screen triangle felt so real.

Veteran actors Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan created an undeniable on-screen magic in their collaborations, cementing their status as one of Bollywood’s most iconic couples. From Mr Natwarlal to Do Anjaane and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, their chemistry was palpable, leading to widespread rumours of an off-screen romance. But it was their 1981 romance drama Silsila that truly captivated audiences, with the film also starring Jaya Bachchan.

In a candid 2006 interview with Filmfare magazine, Rekha spoke about the power of their performances in Silsila, particularly highlighting a deeply emotional dialogue, “Dukh toh is baat ka hai ke maine anjaane mein tumhe dukh pahunchaaya hai” (The sadness lies in the fact that unknowingly, I have hurt you). Rekha praised Amitabh’s craft, describing the way they portrayed love and passion as “real” and heartfelt. “No wonder the world believed that the triangle was for real,” she added, referencing the palpable tension between their characters on screen.

Rekha also reminisced about the film’s timeless song Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum, one of the most romantic tracks in Bollywood, which continues to evoke strong emotions in fans. “My fans write to me that Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye is one of my most romantic songs ever and ask if it was for real,” she said. For her, this reaction is proof of the magical quality of films that connect deeply with audiences. “Somehow the audience also catches on and wants to believe that the vibe is for real,” she said.

Interestingly, the film’s casting had its own story. While Rekha and Jaya Bachchan’s roles in Silsila became iconic, it’s lesser-known that Parveen Babi was initially cast as the leading lady. Ranjeet, who starred in the film, revealed in an interview with ANI that Parveen was originally supposed to play the part, but was replaced due to a controversy. The film eventually went ahead with Rekha and Jaya Bachchan.
