On Friday, veteran actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away at the age of 79. Her demise has left the industry reeling from the shock. As per reports, she died after a prolonged battle with age-related health issues. Kaviyoor Ponnamma was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi several weeks ago and her health has seen a gradual decline ever since. While the industry is mourning her death, actress Manju Warrier has reacted to her demise.
Actress Manju Warrier mourned the death of the iconic star and shared a post on social media and talked about her “failure". She wrote, “There’s something I’m often sad to remember. I have never been able to act in a movie as the daughter of Kaviyoor Ponnamma Chechi. In Malayalam cinema, if you think of a mother, it is her. It is rare to find actors who have not worked with her and portrayed the role of her children on-screen. I am one of them. Ponnamma Chechi is the mother I never got to have on screen!"
Her note further read, “Since my childhood, I’ve only seen Ponnamma Chechi playing the role of a mother in films. Such was her acting that everyone longed for a mother like her." She added, “Her style was natural. In reality, it wasn’t acting; it was the behaviour of a true mother." Manju Warrier said that the actress’s passing felt like the industry had lost the last link in the chain of a motherly figure. She wrote how the passing away of such an actress has left the others “orphaned".
Malayalam industry superstar Mohanlal too shared a heartbreaking note on Facebook. He expressed, “These words describe the pain of a mother’s demise. My dear Ponnamma Chechi has always spread love to the character and the person. We were mother and son to our beloved audience. The pictures of us together in different eras, the truth that a son is always a son to a mother, no matter how much time passes. I never had to act as a son with my dear mother, I lived it."
Kaviyoor Ponnamma was a noted figure in the Malayalam film industry. In her illustrious career which spanned over about sixty years, she has featured in more than 700 films. She started her journey in the 50s and quickly shot to fame for her iconic portrayals of mothers and grandmothers. She has worked with famous actors like Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi.
