Katy Perry might be in trouble for filming her music video Lifetimes on a protected island in Spain without the required permission. On Tuesday, the environment department of the Balearic Islands announced that the production company didn’t get the proper authorisation to film on the protected dunes of S’Espalmador in Ibiza. The video, directed by Stillz, and released on August 8, shows the 39-year-old singer on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, including scenes shot in the ecologically sensitive dunes of S’Espalmador.

The department clarified that it is investigating possible damage to the restricted area, marked by rope, but stated that the filming does not qualify as a “crime against the environment.” Filming can be authorised with prior approval.

S’Espalmador, a small islet about 1.8 miles long north of Formentera, has been part of the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera natural park since 1980, according to the regional government’s tourism website. The dunes on this privately owned, uninhabited island are among the best-preserved in the Balearic Islands and are of significant ecological value.

Perry and her team are likely hoping “Lifetimes” will be a strong comeback after her last single, “Woman’s World,” received poor reviews. The music video, showing skimpily clad women in traditionally male jobs, was slammed for appealing to the male gaze. The backlash was so strong that Perry had to explain on social media that the video was intended as satire. The negative reaction matched the criticism of the single, which was mocked for its lyrics and received harsh reviews from outlets like The Guardian and Dazed. Fans also questioned Perry’s decision to work with Dr. Luke, a producer accused of abusing Kesha, on a song supposedly about feminism.
