Starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead, Kalank was a box-office failure.

In 2019, one period drama that transported us to the golden era was Kalank. Starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead roles, the film was a visual feast from start to finish. Its opulent sets, intricate costumes, and soul-stirring music managed to leave a lasting impression on viewers. As Kalank celebrates its fifth anniversary today, Karan Johar took to Instagram to reminisce about the film’s journey.

On his Instagram story, Karan reposted Dharma Movies’ reel featuring some of the film’s best scenes accompanied by its title track. Alongside the video, Karan wrote, “5 years to a film that will always be special to me in so many ways! Proud of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the telling of the story by Abhishek. Some films are beyond results, they live on with visuals, soul, and music! Kalank will always be that film to us at Dharma!”

Despite its mixed reception upon release, Kalank managed to collect ₹146.31 crore at the worldwide box office. The film was praised for its soundtrack, cinematography, production design, costumes, and performances. At the 65th Filmfare Awards, the film earned a total of nine nominations. Madhuri Dixit received the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in a supporting role, while Pritam received the award for Best Music Director.

Directed by Abhishek Varman and Produced by Dharma Productions and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the film is set in the backdrop of 1946. It delves into the lives of six enigmatic characters whose quests for love intertwine, yet are torn apart by the stark divide between the two worlds of Husnabad, a town in North India.

In the film, Alia Bhatt mesmerized audiences with her portrayal of Roop Chaudhary, while Varun Dhawan breathed life into the character of Zafar, the illegitimate son of Balraj Chaudhary (Played by Sanjay Dutt). Aditya Roy Kapur essayed the role of Dev Chaudhary who was Balraj’s son and Zafar’s half-brother. On the other hand, Sonakshi Sinha’s portrayal of Satya Chaudhary, Dev’s first wife, and Roop’s friend added intrigue to the story. The film also starred Kiara Advani, Kunal Kemmu, and Madhuri Dixit in significant roles.

On the professional front, Karan Johar is currently immersed in the post-production of the upcoming sports drama film Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. The film was originally scheduled for release on April 19, but it will now premiere on May 31.
