Kangana Ranaut BREAKS Silence on Congress Criticising 'Emergency': 'Nobody Can Get Offended...'
Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' dives deep into the controversial 1975-77 period of India's history, exploring power's consequences.

Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of her latest directorial and acting venture, “Emergency,” a film that delves into one of the most controversial periods in India’s post-independence history. The film focuses on the 21-month Emergency from 1975 to 1977, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally declared a state of emergency across the country, a move that had far-reaching consequences for India’s democracy.

Kangana describes “Emergency” as more than just a chronological retelling of historical events. Instead, she views the film as a deeper exploration of power and its often tragic consequences. “Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy,” Kangana shared in an interview with Variety, referring to Indira Gandhi. “It’s not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is. When people see the film, they will realise that it is such an honest take on the Emergency, what led to it, and what eventually came of it.”

The film also touches upon the fateful events following the Emergency, including Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984 and her son Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1989. Both served as Prime Ministers of India, and their legacy continues to influence the country’s political landscape. The Indian National Congress, the party they represented, has been in opposition since 2014 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of which Kangana is a member, came to power.

Despite the sensitive nature of the subject and the fact that the Gandhi family is now in opposition, Kangana remains confident about the film’s reception. She revealed that a “large team of historians” who lived through the Emergency, including friends of Indira Gandhi and those who opposed her, have contributed to the film’s accuracy. “Nobody can get offended by this kind of honesty,” Kangana said, emphasising the film’s balanced perspective.

Kangana recently shared a new poster of “Emergency” on her Instagram, announcing the trailer’s release date. The poster features her as Indira Gandhi, alongside Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Vishwak Nair portraying Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Sanjay Gandhi, respectively. She captioned the post, “Witness the Darkest Times of Democratic Indian History & the Lust for Power that Almost Burned Down the Nation! #EmergencyTrailer out on 14th August. The Explosive Saga of the Darkest Chapter of Indian Democracy #Emergency unfolds in cinemas worldwide on 6th September.”

“Emergency” is co-produced by Kangana and Renu Pitti under the banners of Manikarnika Films and EaseMyTrip, with distribution handled by Zee Studios.
