Imtiaz Ali Reveals Why He Opted For An OTT Release For Amar Singh Chamkila: 'People Who Are Not From...'
Imtiaz Ali said that he made Amar Singh Chamkila in Hindi because he wanted people outside of Punjab to also watch it.

Imtiaz Ali’s latest directorial venture, Amar Singh Chamkila, is about to be released. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles and the cast has created quite the excitement among fans. Amar Singh Chamkila premieres on April 12, on Netflix. Recently, Imtiaz Ali spoke about why he opted for an OTT release and not a theatrical release for the film.

Imtiaz told Pinkvilla, “Well, new things come along and you must try it… I believe that I am like a big cinema watcher, like a theatre viewer and a director. When I close my eyes and think about a film, I always imagine myself on the big screen in a theatre and watching the big screen. I can’t help it, but I don’t think that will be a bad thing for a film I made for an OTT.”

Imtiaz Ali added, “So, it’s a new thing and I feel that there is a certain reach and the point of making Chamkila for me, I am a Hindi film director but making Chamkila in Hindi I thought was necessary because Chamkila is a very big subject and I think it’s a universal subject. So, I wanted people who are not from Punjab should also see it and enjoy it. People perhaps that are not from this country and don’t even speak these native languages should be able to enjoy it. So, that’s the reason why we made Chamkila in Hindi, that’s not your question, but that’s my answer.”

Speaking with News18 Showsha earlier this month, Imtiaz said that he couldn’t imagine anyone but Diljit and Parineeti in the lead for the film. “It was mandatory for me to cast actors who are singers as well. It was important for them to sing live. This film wouldn’t have been possible without them. It’s not like Diljit didn’t train a lot like Parineeti did but he does live singing and is used to it. They both recorded the songs after singing them live. The reason behind this is that I’ve never had singers singing live during a shot. I thought that in case, the live singing doesn’t work out, we can always use the recorded version and use it as playback like we usually do,” he told us exclusively.
