The previous two installments of the popular ‘Hate Story’ franchise had fared extremely well at the box office, helping the stars concerned find firm footing in the Hindi film industry. As such, expectations were at an all time high when ‘Hate Story 3’ arrived in theatres this Friday.
However, when all is said and done, it becomes clear that this attempted sequel is nothing more than a damp squib which fails to do justice to the high standards set by the earlier parts of the series.
Touted as an erotic-thriller, ‘Hate Story 3’ revolves around the rivalry between a business tycoon and a suave young man. Even at a very superficial level the basic plot comes across as very generic and lacks freshness. This problem is magnified courtesy some unimaginative writing.
The screenplay, which is Vikram Bhatt’s brainchild, comes across as rushed, half-baked and convoluted. Moreover, it relies too much on “Telling” rather than “showing”. As such, nearly all the characters come across as mere caricatures. As a result, it is quite difficult for the viewer to be even remotely interested in the onscreen events. On top of that the narrative plagued by clichés and predictable twists. It doesn’t offer anything new.
Interestingly, some of the scenes have potential. The sequence featuring the first meeting between Sharman Joshi and Karan Singh Grover is a case in point. The same must also be said about the final scene which adds a bit of emotional depth to the narrative. However, none of these scenes are able to make a long lasting impact courtesy the flawed writing.
As far as performances are concerned, Sharman has been miscast. He is unable to bring out the arrogant and flamboyant nature of his character courtesy his ‘boy next door’ looks . Moreover, the chemistry between him and Zarine Khan is extremely insipid. Karan merely goes through the motions without getting into the skin of his character.
Daisy Shah gets limited scope to showcase her acting prowess. As such, she isn’t able to make much of an impact. Similarly, Zarine Khan too fails to enthrall audiences. She delivers an absolutely wooden act. In fact, the Veer’ actress wears the same bored expression throughout the film.
As far as the technical aspects are concerned, the background score is quite impressive. Its racy nature adds some life to the mundane narrative. Similarly, the music to is quite praiseworthy. Unfortunately, the placement of the numbers is pretty disappointing. They end up breaking the film’s flow. The cinematography is okay. The intimate scenes have been filmed rather aesthetically. The editing too is decent.
To cut a long story short, ‘Hate Story 3’ is a failed attempt at storytelling. It proves that content is king and sleaze is no substitute for a well written screenplay.
