‘Fresh Perspective’: Politician R Bindu Praises Christo Tomy’s Malayalam Film Ullozhukku
R Bindu, who is the Minister of Higher Education of Kerala, shared her views on Ullozhukku.

We see many instances of praise and appreciation of a really good film by actors, directors, cinematographers and people from the film fraternity. We also see instances of common people who are cinema goers do so. But we don’t see ministers do this. Simply because films are a very different avenue from politics, and with the pressure of running a certain ministry of a state or territory, they don’t have the luxury of the time to watch films, let alone comment. There’s always an exception though. R Bindu, who is the Minister of Higher Education of Kerala, took to her facebook account a few days ago and shared her views on the film Ullozhukku. She wrote: “When I heard that the film primarily revolves around female characters and features two exceptional actresses in leading roles, I went to see Ullozhukku on its release day itself. The film’s fresh perspective and sensitive portrayal, coupled with gripping storytelling, have been commendable. It exposes the falsity of myths like ‘family’ and its sentiments, highlighting the crumbling foundation of such establishments.”

She further added that the film succeeds in portraying the agony caused by the false pride of relatives, and effectively exposes the underlying conflicts that affect the lives of those who need support and understanding. “However, towards the end, there seems to be a return to conventional attitudes, which raises doubts. This film competes with the natural acting talent of two actresses and captivates everyone …this world is primarily for women isn’t it?” R Bindu said.

Ullozhukku is directed by Cristo Tomy, and features a star cast of Parvathy Thiruvothu and Urvashi. The movie also features Arjun Radhakrishnan, Shebin Benson and Alencier Ley Lopez. The genre of the film is drama. The movie hit theatres on June 21. Since its release, it has been garnering overwhelmingly positive reviews, owing to the brilliant acting performances of Urvashi and Parvathy. The movie has been written by Chisto Tomy.

Prior to Ullozhukku, Christo Tomy directed the documentary series streaming on Netflix, called Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case. It is a true crime series that investigates six deaths in the same family, based on the Koodathai cyanide killings. It has a rating of 6.7 on IMDB. Ullozhukku is Tomy’s first motion picture.
