The fans of the iconic science fiction franchise Star Wars can rarely imagine someone else playing the roles of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), or Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Over the 47 years since the first Star Wars film came out, many established actors have spoken about auditioning for the roles and eventually not getting them. Recently, actor Christopher Walken, who was seen in Dune Part Two, shared that he too auditioned for Star Wars. Walken told Variety that he had auditioned for the role of Han Solo and even did a screen test alongside actor Jodie Foster. However, neither he nor Foster ended up doing the film.

He recalled, “I think it was for Han Solo. Yes, I auditioned for it. And if I’m not mistaken, my partner in the audition was — I think this is true — it was Jodie Foster … I think we did a screen test. I’m not sure we did a scene. Maybe we just sat in front of, in those days, those old videotape cameras … I did audition for ‘Star Wars,’ but so did about 500 other actors. It was lots of people doing that.”

In January Foster appeared on The Tonight Show and recalled her Star Wars audition for the role of Princess Leia. She said she was even offered the role by filmmaker George Lucas but she had to turn it down because she was under a contract with Disney and her dates were blocked. The Oscar-winning actor recalled, “They were going for a younger Princess Leia but I had a conflict. I was doing a Disney movie and I just didn’t want to pull out of the Disney movie because I was already under contract.” She mentioned that she was only 13 or 14 years old at the time of the audition. Actor Carrie Fisher ended up playing Princess Leia in the superhit franchise.

Back in October 2023, actor Kelsey Grammer appeared on the In Depth podcast and talked about his failed Star Wars audition. Grammer shared that an agent gave him the address where George Lucas was holding the Star Wars auditions. Grammer remembered that during the auditioning process, George Lucas told him that he was more suited to the role of Han Solo than Luke Skywalker. However, after the audition, he never heard back.
