Recall being a kid, sitting wide-eyed in front of the TV, watching Back to the Future for the first time. Now, fast forward to adulthood and you’re sharing a stage with the very person who made that film iconic. That’s exactly how Chris Martin felt when he played music with Michael J Fox. On October 3, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Coldplay frontman, 47, talked about the “surreal" experience of performing with Fox, 63, at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival in England.

“I think for people your age and my age, there are certain things that are just deeply ingrained in us, especially things that inspired us to want to pursue this career. One of those things was definitely Michael in Back to the Future," Martin shared with Fallon, reminiscing about Fox’s breakout role in the 1985 classic.

Martin added, “It’s so surreal to me that we get to play with him. It feels like being seven years old and being in heaven, that’s what it’s like. Of course, he’s incredibly inspirational as a person, and then, on top of that, he’s Marty McFly."

Martin also recalled a previous performance with Fox at a charity event, where he asked the actor to play two songs from Back to the Future. “He was so gracious. And in the middle of Earth Angel, he did that thing from the movie, where he looks at his hand like it’s disappearing. That moment, you know, it’s everything," Martin said.

Earlier in the show, Martin had some fun with the audience, disguising himself as Nigel in a floppy brown wig and glasses. He even joined Fallon onstage to play a few tunes, humorously changing the lyrics and cracking up the crowd.

Chris Martin’s appearance on The Tonight Show came just days after his surprise duet with Ed Sheeran at the 2024 Global Citizen Festival in New York on September 28.
