Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai's Nehha Pendse on Choosing Clothes for Her Character, Aasif Sheikh and Shubhangi Atre
'Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai' actress Nehha Pendse opens up taking on the role of Anita Mishra aka Gori Mem in the comedy show and how she plans to give it her distinct touch.

One of TVs most loved comedy shows, Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, has now re-cast new faces in both its popular lead characters Angoori and Anita. Nehha Pendse has joined the laughter bandwagon and is steadily getting into the skin of Anita aka Gori Mem. Comedy is not a new genre for the actress and she is pleased to take up another show that offers women a space to explore their humour and wit.

“I believe that women in comedy have paved the way for themselves in the industry and given a firm response to ‘whether women can take a joke’ by making one instead. It is empowering to see women take up such projects and counter stereotypes. The trope is broken that a woman is always at the receiving end of a humorous crack, and I aim to do the same with my role as Anita Bhabi in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai,” says Nehha.

She also talks at length about giving Anita her distinct touch, what’s new with her character’s styling and her first impression of co-stars Aasif Sheikh and Shubhangi Atre. She also touches upon the Bhabiji character being an ‘identification factor’ for her and how true success will be marked by the show audiences accepting her in this famed role.

What new can we expect from your character Anita as you step into Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai?

Firstly, I am thrilled to be playing the role. I have made my contributions in the fresh look of Anita Bhabi. The idea was not to create an entirely new look but bring alive my personality with a tinge of freshness to the overall persona of Anita Bhabi. The Indo-western look continues, but the glam quotient and the oomph factor will be a notch higher. I am eagerly looking forward to the audience’s response.

What have your inputs been on the styling of Anita Bhabi in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai?

When I play a character, I like to introduce a little bit of Nehha in it to gel with the role. The colour palette, especially for the sarees, will be solid and bright colours with a vintage look for a classier and elegant look. The patterns and designs are inspired from the late ’80s and early ’90s, with fabrics like satin and chiffon in sarees with a unique draping style.

I am in love with the pastel colours and the subtle tinge of florals worn back in the 80s and 90s. The accessories will be vintage, adding a beautiful contrast. My wardrobe will be an amalgamation of various Indo-western clothing, ranging from stunning long skirts, tunics, co-ords, sweatshirts, variant pants and much more. I will be doing the makeup and it will be minimalistic with soft, nude shades, keeping the look natural with a dewy finish, accompanied by a glossy lipstick in a natural hue. My contributions to the new look will be distinct and unlike any other before.

Is the Bhabiji character an image trap?

Using the term ‘trap’ is harsh. It is an identification factor when someone recognises you as your character first and then by your name. Playing Anita Bhabi is a real honour for me. I would be more than glad to be known as Anita Bhabi, first by my viewers. It will be a mark of true success.

Will a TV shoot give you time for other projects?

Any project, be it in the film, television or OTT platform requires the same amount of hard work and dedication. &TV’s Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai is the only project I am currently working on. It has my undivided attention. Since it is a daily show, the schedule is packed and does not leave me with much time to take on another project.

How are your co-stars and the Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai unit treating you on the set? Which actor do you like working with the most?

After a hectic long journey to the sets, seeing my co-actors’ bright and loving faces is refreshing. They all have been so welcoming and warm towards me, which only highly speaks of them as a team. I am now a part of this lovely little family, and it is too soon to say who is my best bud!

Does the age of a co-star bother you? How is it like being paired opposite Aasif Sheikh on screen who is around 20 years older than you?

What’s in an age? It is just a number! No, the age difference doesn’t matter to me. It is all about the characters and the storyline. As long as both our characters work well together and exhibit a chemistry that Anita-Vibhuti pair is famous for, nothing like it! Aasif Sheikh is a highly talented actor. I am overjoyed to be paired opposite him. I am looking forward to a lovely journey on the show and creating beautiful bonds with the cast.

Are you getting along with the other Bhabiji, Shubhangi Atre? Do you see her as a competition?

Shubhangi Atre and I have bonded well. Both the Bhabis have become very close. We enjoy chatting together and grabbing food every now and then. Just like any other artist, I see everyone as competition, be it actors or actresses. Each artist has their unique talent and skill sets from which I learn a lot, and hence it motivates me to perform better.
