Actress Navya Nair Refuses To Comment On Hema Committee Report, Says ‘Not Running Away’
The Hema Committee Report revealed accounts of women being sexually harassed in the Malayalam film industry.

Actress Navya Nair recently made a statement while addressing media inquiries going on regarding the Hema Committee during a recent press conference held as part of Matangi Fest. Navya Nair said, “What I am saying now is to only ask questions related to the festival, so that I am not interpreted as absconding. When I come to another place after this, I would be happy if you ask such questions then.” She clarified that she has no intention of running away. “I’m not currently saying this to avoid being interpreted as fleeing; I know there will be more questions of this nature than those related to the festival. I have no intention of running away,” she added. She further expressed her understanding of the media’s perspective. “It’s enough to recognise that what you feel is what I feel too,” she remarked.

Earlier, in an exclusive interview, Bollywood actor Rahul Bose questioned why no other industry, other from the Malayalam film industry, works on Hema Committee-like bodies.

The Hema Committee Report, which was released last month, revealed the malicious methods in which women are sexually harassed in the Malayalam film business. After the report’s results were made public, awareness spread, particularly in other film sectors. Many women continue to feel unsafe and suffer, many men have spoken out in support of the battle against abuse.

“People are only talking about it because it’s in the news. But this is not just about one industry,” Rahul Bose pointed out, adding, “Why has no other industry come out and said we should also do something like this? It’s a great opportunity for other industries, be it banks, law, or even accounts, to do the same thing and look within. Everyone can form a committee to do an audit and create awareness.”

The Justice Hema Committee report released in August 2023 shed light on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. The report’s revelations have sparked a range of reactions, including from the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), a group of women from the industry.
