‘Two and Half Men’ star Charlie Sheen broke his silence to open up and confirm about his medical condition. In an interview to Matt Lauer on Radio Today, Sheen revealed he is HIV positive. Sheen’s revelation was a gutsy move by any celebrity in the world, who came out in the open to talk about the medical condition which is stigmatized.
More than 80 per cent of the civilised societies across the world have several misconceptions regarding HIV positive and AIDS patients. Sheen’s courage to come out in the open will always be considered as the first step towards the welfare of AIDS and HIV positive patients.
“It’s a hard three letters to absorb. It’s a turning point in one’s life,” said the 50 year old actor. He revealed of paying a bomb to those who blackmailed him. Rumours about Sheen’s drug problem, his obsession with adult movies and porn stars and transsexuals was making rounds for long, but his confirmation has put an end to all the inappropriate information related to him.
The entire report was in no way an attempt to sensationalise Charlie’s condition, thus, the actor’s personal physician Dr Robert Huizenga, an associate professor of clinical medicine at University of California accompanied him to confirm “Charlie does not have AIDS.”
Let’s take a look at important reactions that followed Charlie Sheen’s gutsy revelation:
Support on the internet: More than 345k tweets flooded Twitter, as soon as Charlie made an appearance on the morning show in the USA. Widely circulated #CharlieSheen had a number of positive messages that confirmed that the world is opening up to HIV positive people. What's risky behavior when it comes to HIV? Not nearly as risky as you think #CharlieSheen. I don't see anybody making fun of somebody getting diagnosed with cancer. HIV is no joke. #CharlieSheen
Revealing his drug addiction: “The personal disbelief, karmic confusion, shame and anger lead to a temporary yet abysmal descent into profound substance abuse and fathomless drinking. It was a suicide run. Problem was-I’d forgotten that I’m too tough for such a cowardly departure. Yet, despite this loathsome and horrific odyssey, I was vigilant with my anti-viral program,” revealed Charlie in an open letter that he wrote to clarify about his medical condition.
Support from Hollywood stars: Singer Lady Gaga, Piers Morgan, Heather Locker, Al Roker and Laverene Cox were among the first few Hollywood biggies who took to Twitter to extend their support towards Charlie. The celebrities hailed Charlie, for standing up to eradicate the stigma associate with HIV positive patients.
No blame game: Instead of blaming the world or playing a victim, Charlie Sheen has realized his responsibility towards his fans and all those who are inflicted with the disease. “I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people, and hopefully with what we’re doing today, others may come forward and say, 'Thanks, Charlie. Thanks for kicking the door open.”
Ready to face legal ramification: Charlie Sheen might get sued over making his HIV diagnosis public. Hollywood publicist and crises manager Howard Bragman told the People magazine that Charlie has been “concerned about a fear of litigation from former sexual partners. In the show, Sheen insisted he told all his past sexual partners about his diagnosis and has not transmitted the virus to anyone.
