The monsoon spells have offered a much-needed respite to the country. Heavy rains have begun in many parts of the state. While this has helped decrease temperatures, it has also increased the risk of spreading diseases. Health experts suggest that people should take special care of their foods and drinks to stay healthy in the rainy season. After all, foods and drinks have a direct impact on our health. During monsoons, the temperature keeps fluctuating with extreme humidity levels, making the perfect environment for viruses and breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi. So, there are a couple of foods that you must avoid during the monsoons.

Poonam Duneja, Senior Dietician at Nutrify by Poonam Diet and Wellness Clinic, New Delhi in an interview with News18 shared her opinion about the rainy season and its impact on food. As per her, during the monsoon season, food items get spoiled within a few hours and hence, people should be cautious. She strictly urged people to avoid consuming street foods and junk foods as this can cause stomach infections. Apart from this, she emphasised the need to drink clean water.

Avoid these foods in the rainy season.

According to the dietician, street foods should be completely avoided during the rainy season. There is always a risk of stomach infection and getting diarrhoea or food poisoning. If you have stomach-related problems, then avoid eating paani puri, pav bhaji, momo, or other Chinese foods. Also, avoid too much oily and deep-fried foods.

Avoid green leafy vegetables.

Try to avoid green leafy vegetables during the rainy season. First, wash them, then clean them thoroughly, and cook them properly. Only then should they be consumed. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and lettuce or cauliflower and broccoli retain moisture and become breeding grounds for bacteria. If not cleaned thoroughly it can lead to stomach infection.

Do not keep food in the open for more than 3-4 hours.

During the monsoons, avoid eating food that has been kept in the open for three to four hours. Due to extreme humidity in the atmosphere, there is a risk of bacterial growth in the foods. Eat homemade food as much as possible and try not to keep food in the refrigerator to eat it next day.

Avoid meats and sliced fruits.

During this season, the expert urged people to avoid meat, slice fruits and foods kept outside in the open. Flies can contaminate the food by sitting on these, along with the dirt blowing in. The risk of bacterial infection will also increase. Make sure to buy whole and fresh foods.

Boil the drinking water.

Make sure to boil the drinking water. Let it cool down and then drink it. This will kill all the bacteria present in the water and make it safe for you to consume.
