KOCHI: The Onam celebrations in the city passed off peacefully with no criminal cases reported thanks to the zealous police team which ensured that law and order is maintained.The police took all precautionary measures to avoid occurrence of any unsavoury incidents and posted officials in every corner of the city.Though the number of violence and criminal cases is usually high during the festive season, this time around, the tight security blanket spread across the city ensured that no such incidents were reported.Those who regularly engage in pickpocketing and several thugs were placed under preventive custody to ensure safe shopping time for the public.The Police and the Excise team were also on their toes to prevent the sale of illicit liquor.Night patrolling was intensified and control rooms were opened.According to Assistant Commissioner(special branch) M N Ramesh, more than 2,000 police were in action round the clock to ensure safe Onam for all Kochiites.“The fact that no criminal cases were reported this time can be seen as the achievement of the police.We had enhanced the basic policing to maintain law and order in the city.We also took several people into custody on the basis of the complaints received from the control room” Ramesh added.
