Zardari claims Nawaz support, Nawaz signals otherwise
On Friday, PPP nominated, Zardari as its candidate to succeed Musharraf.

Islamabad: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice Chairman, Asif Ali Zardari is now eyeing the Presidential chair after his party nominated him as their Presidential candidate.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Zardari said that he is ready to take over as the next President of Pakistan. However, he requires Nawaz Sharif's support to be on the Presidential chair and he claims Nawaz is backing him. However Sharif signaled otherwise.

Sharif hardened his stance on restoring judges. He has given Zardari time till Monday to restore Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudhary and the 60 other judges.

Earlier on Friday, PPP nominated, Asif Ali Zardari as its candidate to succeed Pervez Musharraf as the President of Pakistan.

Information Minister Sherry Rehman told reporters in Islamabad that the leadership of the PPP, the country's largest political party, had unanimously proposed Zardari.

However, Zardari's nomination could deepen rifts in the ruling coalition, which took power after defeating Musharraf's political allies in Feb 18 elections.

The second largest party in the alliance, Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N), has indicated its preference for a candidate without political affiliations, preferably from a smaller province.

The wrangling between the two major parties, the left-wing PPP and the right-wing PML-N, has intensified on several issues, including on the restoration of judges.

The squabbling between the parties has disappointed the public as well as Pakistan's Western allies who want political stability so that the government can focus on problems like Islamic militancy and an economic meltdown.

As per the schedule announced by the Pakistan Election Commission, a new President will be elected on September 6.
