PHULBANI: The Assistant Sessions Judge of Phulbani on Tuesday sentenced a youth to seven years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 for raping a polio-afflicted girl. The accused, Sanjit Kumar Behera alias Tulu, of Harijan Sahi of Sudrukumpa village under Phulbani Sadar police limits had invited the girl to his house for dinner in April 2008. After dinner when she, along with her three friends, was watching the Danda Jatra in their village he took the 22-year-old girl to a place near a voluntary organisation ‘PAHAD’ and raped her by gagging her and tying her hands and legs. Her mother found the girl weeping near the house of the accused. The next day as the accused did not confess to the crime, the matter was reported to Sadar police by the victim herself.After examining 15 witnesses, including the victim, the medical officer and the police officer, the Assistant Sessions Judge pronounced the judgment.
