HUBLI: Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has asked farmers who are ready to part with their land for the steel plant in Gadag district, not to stage a protest, either in front of Tontadarya Mutt, or the DC office, in order to stress their demands.
Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Yeddyurappa stated that the government has already stated its stand on the acquisition of land in Gadag district, and "will not change at any condition". This has also been given in writing to Siddalinga Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt through the deputy commission. The government's policy on land acquisition was quite clear; the government would allow the industries to operate where the farmers willingly agreed to hand over their land. Only barren and dry land would be acquired and "no forcible acquisition of farm land", he reaffirmed.

Later, meeting with the Halligudi farmers of Gadag, who were ready to give up their land for steel plants, the Chief Minister reiterated that only if Tontadarya Swamiji and every individual farmer agreed to offer their land, then the government would consider changing their stand. Until then, the land acquisition will be kept in abeyance, he added.

Upon being asked about the reported allegation of Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, who accused BJP's senior functionary of trying to influence him, Yeddyurappa said that he has highest regard for the Lokayukta. He only reacted after receiving a report on illegal mining from him (Hegde). He also refused to react about the absence of National General Secretary, Anantkumar, for the state BJP executive.
