Womens University to expand to districts

Taking a cue from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), the Karnataka State Women’s University (KSWU)-Bijapur is all set to expand its jurisdiction to other districts. The university passed a Syndicate resolution in this regard.

The women’s university, which was established in 2003, currently has 70 women’s colleges affiliated to it in 13 districts in North Karnataka.

“When VTU, which is located in Belgaum, can have engineering colleges across the state affiliated to it, why not KSWU? We have passed a Syndicate resolution, and have sent the same to the state government,” said Vice-Chancellor Dr Meena R Chandawarkar. The university had three hostels, two of which would be ready next month. She said that the extension of academic coverage of the university would help gross enrolment ratio of women.

“Based on the needs of women, we have introduced Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Political Science at PG levels. We are setting up three new centres for multidisciplinary research, development of womanhood,” said Dr Chandawarkar. The university is aiming at increase in its admissions. Dr Chandawarkar expects an increase in admissions by at least 30 per cent this year.
