White House awaits verdict in CIA probe
Washington, and especially the White House staff was on pins and needles on Wednesday as the prosecutor in the investigation of the CIA operative's identity met with a federal judge.

Washington: The federal grand jury investigating the CIA leak met on Wednesday with special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald as the prosecutor.

Tension builds in Washington D.C as the prosecutor prepares to frame criminal charges.

Fitzgerald is known to be putting the finishing touches on a two-year criminal probe that has ensnared President Bush's top political adviser Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis Libby.

Vice-President of US Dick Cheney is in the dock for the alleged exposure of a CIA agent's identity.

His key advisors Rove and Libby could face criminal charges if convicted of blowing the cover on agent Victoria Plame.

The prosecutor has also examined other possible crimes such as mishandling classified information, false statements and obstruction of justice.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, "Well, first of all, there's a lot of speculation going around and I think there are a lot of facts that simply are not known at this point."

It remains an ongoing investigation and we'll let the special prosecutor continue to do his work, he added.
