Kolkata: Inmates of the District Correctional Home at Hooghly in West Bengal went on a rampage and set fire to properties inside the jail premises on Wednesday evening. The ugly incident happened after clashes broke out between the jail authorities and some transferred inmates, who were brought in from the Presidency jail in Kolkata.
The jail warden and four staff were injured in the clashes after inmates allegedly brick-batted the staff. The jail superintendent was also reportedly pushed and abused.
Prison authorities confirmed that the ruckus began at around 4 pm when 11 transferred prisoners were being searched by guards at the prison entrance. An inmate, Nepu Giri, who is accused of murder and dacoity, reportedly got into an altercation with one of the guards and subsequently manhandled him.
Other inmates soon joined in and began pelting stones at the prison staff while one prisoner locked the gate from inside. The rampaging prisoners then set ablaze parts of the jail entrance and the kitchen area, prison officials said.
A backup police team, which reached the spot later, had to scale the prison walls to get inside and took four hours to bring the situation under control. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob and fire brigade services were pushed into service to douse the fire. It all settled into place by 8 pm.
