New Delhi: West Bengal has topped the list of states that registered the maximum number of crimes against women last year, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.
"West Bengal recorded 29,133 cases of crime against women. The highest number of cases registered among 28 states in 2011," Jitendra Singh, minister of state for home affairs, told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.
According to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, Andhra Pradesh stood second with a total of 28,246 cases. Uttar Pradesh was third with 22,639 cases of crime against women.
The NCRB included rape, kidnapping, abduction, dowry deaths, molestation, sexual harassment and trafficking in its report.
