MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday granted exemption to Finance Minister O Panneerselvam from appearing before a special court in the case of disproportionate assets against him.The special court trying the case had directed Panneerselvam and his family members to appear before it in connection with the case registered against them by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in 2006.According to the chargesheet, Panneerselvam and his family members had wealth in Theni, the minister’s native district, disproportionate to their known sources of income. The case was transferred to a special court in Madurai a few days ago, and only Balamurugan, Panneerselvam’s brother appeared before the court. Later, the court directed the minister, his wife and other family members to appear before it on Nov 28, 2011. The minister filed an appeal against the notice before the High Court Bench here.Justice V Periya Karuppiah, before whom the matter came up on Friday, passed an interim order restraining the special court from seeking the appearance of the minister, for two weeks.
