As part of ensuring safety for tourists, the Kochi city police have decided to beef up the security system in the Fort Kochi area. The security system will be powered by surveillance cameras, that will be installed at the beach and at places where tourists stay in high numbers.
According to sources in the police, the cameras were installed after several complaints of misguiding and cheating the tourists were reported in the area. Similarly, the cameras will also be used to monitor the law and order situation here.
“In the last few years, several incidents of crime against tourists have been reported from Fort Kochi. Hence, we decided to install cameras at different places in Fort Kochi,” a police official said.
More than 30 cameras having night vision facility will also be installed in all parts of the area soon. The installation of the cameras has already started and the work will be completed within a month’s time. The output of these cameras will be visible from the control room.
Control room officials on the basis of the camera output will alert the policemen in Fort Kochi area. Incidents of violence have been reported frequently from the area. The Kochi city police are also looking at starting a project to bring the entire city under the surveillance of cameras. “They will be installed in every nook and corner. Kochi city is growing rapidly and several important establishments are functioning here. So we are looking at installing over 150 cameras all across the city. The Integrated Digital Security System will ensure complete safety of the people in the city,” T J Joseph, Assistant Commissioner, Control Room, said.
