HYDERABAD: When she was 15, Deepti Vallapuri met a man online who claimed to be a business tycoon from Malaysia. After a brief courtship, they married. She soon realised that he was a fraudster. Being a teenager, Deepti’s marriage was declared null and void. She then fell into the wiles of another man and married him. After two children, he abandoned her.Wronged twice while still in her teens, the girl from Guntur set out on a path of vengeance against men, using the same methods as had been used against her. She became a marital trickster and went on to dupe several persons, including an NRI in the name of marriage. Deepti’s serial frauds went unchecked till she was arrested by the state police for impersonation and cheating though online matrimonial websites. “Our investigation have so far revealed that she cheated 5 to 6 persons through online chatting and directly,” Crime Investigation Department (CID) additional SP U Rammohan Rao said. To her victims, Deepti, now 25, introduced herself variously as an engineer, a doctor or a highly-qualified person.“Once a person begins to get interested, she starts extracting money from him,” Rammohan Rao said. The latest man to fall into her trap was a NRI software engineer. The man came in contact with Deepti this April through the portal Bharat Matrimony. Deepti identified herself as Deepika Reddy Karri, an MBBS grad from Osmania University, the police said. Deepti lured the NRI into online friendship and promised to marry him when once he returned from the US. “Since then, Deepti started asking the NRI money on the pretext of a donation for a child’s brain surgery and setting up a distance education centre. The NRI wired her money through Western Union and even asked his friends and parents to deposit money in the woman’s bank account,” Rammohan Rao said.It was only after shelling out nearly `14.32 lakh that the NRI became wise to the foul play. He lodged a complaint with the CID. Based on her mobile phone numbers, bank accounts, IP address and internet communications, CID detectives arrested her in Guntur.Deepti operated under several aliases: Deepti Vallapuri, Deepika Reddy Karri, Surya Deepthi. Sleuths said they are yet to ascertain the amount of money she collected from her victims. “She lived a luxurious life. She recently renovated her house at Brodipet in Guntur. She cleared all her hospital bills, purchased costly garments, mobiles, laptops and electronic goods and travelled a lot,” the CID officials said.Cases under Sections of 66-D of IT (Amendment Act) and 419 and 420 of IPC were registered against Deepti.
