BANGALORE: In a press statement issued on Sunday, Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor N Prabhu Dev acknowledged an attempt to destabilise him, by what he described as a formidable force consisting of a section of the syndicate along with a senior member of the administration. He issued the statement to highlight his journey as the VC of BU for three years. Outlining the university’s achievements during his tenure, Dr Prabhu Dev stated that BU was ranked 9th position among country’s top colleges. He also stated that due to the divisive forces at the university,  the award, University with potential for Excellence,  presented by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC), BU did not receive  the award.  “Bangalore University scored 76 on 100.  We should have got 86 score to receive the award. However, I take full responsibility for the failure,” he said.  On the recent controversy surrounding the proposed Bangalore School of Economics, a project worth 100 crore which was to be funded by the Sitaram Jindal Foundation, but was scrapped, he said, “BSE was my brainchild. It would have been a benchmark for other schools to be established under Bangalore University.” He alleged that a planted story, calling it a real estate deal by a member of the syndicate, was the reason behind scrapping the school .He also touched upon the recent violence on campus, and said,  “A director of distance education was assaulted in his office by the Sri Rama Sene for refusing to permit malpractice. The same forces have carried out these acts,” he said.  The VC announced that BU’s hostels would be renovated and students would get smart cards in future.
