Varudu is the story of hero Sandeep aka Sandy (Allu Arjun), a modern day youth who believes in the virtues of the arranged marriage. He urges his parents (Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Ashish Vidyarthi) to find an appropriate girl for him. They find Deepthi (Bhanu Sri Mehra) and on the request of Sandy they arrange an elaborate wedding ceremony inviting all their relatives.
However just minutes before the wedding, the bride is kidnapped by Diwakar (Arya) who wants to marry her. Diwakar is the evil brother of politician Prabhakar (Ahuti Prasad) and the entire region including the police dread them. How the hero rescues his bride from Diwakar and marries her forms the rest of the story.
Allu Arjun makes a sincere attempt to do well, but is let down by the script. He needs to improve his dialogue delivery for such roles. He looks good in the marriage costumes however he does not get a chance to showcase his dancing skills in the movie. Bhanu Sri Mehra making her debut in this movie is OK. She does not have a meaty role in the movie with just one song and a few scenes.
Suhasini and Ashish Vidyarthi are good as the parents of the bridegroom. Nasser in the role of the police officer and Sayaji Shinde as the politician fit their roles. Brahmanandam is his usual self as the modern day marriage broker. Tamil action hero Arya excels as the villain with eccentric features. He has a well-sketched role and although he is aided by a dubbing voice, he stands out in the movie.
The movie consists of two different parts. The first half is all about the virtues of arranged marriage. The story takes a sudden twist minutes before the interval and the second half is all about the confrontation between the hero and villain for the bride.
The movie would have been better off sticking to one of the two themes – arranged marriage, which is an unexplored yet interesting idea or the hero-villain confrontation, which was the theme in the director's earlier blockbuster Okkadu. Instead, the director mixes both and disappoints the audience with routine stuff.
Director Gunasekhar is known for the visual settings in his movies. In this movie too, he uses special visual setting for the marriage and the climax fight sequences. The marriage mandapam is magnificent and impressive costumes of the bride and the bridegroom make the marriage scenes a visual delight. However the other structures and settings used for the climax fight sequences are quite unnecessary and seem to be created just for the heck of it.
Music by Mani Sharma is average with the songs Aidhu Rojula Pelli and Bahusha O Chanchala standing out. The song Rela Re Rela Re is catchy.
None of the movie’s promotions (banners and TV advertisements) so far have revealed the heroine. This is a good concept which is in line with the movie story where the hero decides the watch the bride’s face on the marriage mandapam just before tying the knot. Against such a backdrop, the movie goes into a regular hero-villain clash like any other movie. The audience will not miss anything by skipping this movie and can instead stay glued to the IPL matches.
