CHENNAI: Vacancies for doctors, nurses and allied positions in all government hospitals in Tamil Nadu would be filled soon through a proposed Medical Recruitment Board — a first of its kind in the country.Replying to the discussion on a ‘special mention’ on the issue in the Assembly on Friday, health minister Dr V S Vijay said as of now, there were 91,658 posts in the health department, of which 15,689 were lying vacant. These include posts of doctors, nurses and basic workers. On the direction of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, 380 doctors have already been appointed and 911 doctors and 364 nurses would be posted by the end of this month. Steps would be taken to appoint those who were undergoing nursing courses in government hospitals. As many as 170 posts of junior assistants would also be filled soon, the health minister said. The Medical Recruitment Board would function under a high-level committee, Dr Vijay said. Those who are appointed through this Board would work at least three years in the same place.  The Board would appoint doctors in districts like Ramanathapuram, Nilgris and Nagapattinam, he said.
