THOOTHUKUDI: Two American sailors were badly beaten up by the public for misbehaving with women on the New Year eve at Thoothukudi on Saturday.Police sources said around 8 pm on Saturday, when the southern Tamil Nadu town was gearing up to usher in the New Year, three American nationals were seen standing near Cruz Fernandez Statue junction on the Thoothukudi-Palayamkottai Road and greeting every passerby. The three men were allegedly in an inebriated condition. A little later, they were noticed stopping two-wheeler riders and to wish them. Soon, they took their revelry too far when they were reportedly noticed shaking hands of the women passing by and even planting an odd kiss on some women on their cheeks and lips, claims the police source.Though the women raised an alarm, the trio continued with their revelry. Soon, a crowd of local people gathered and began hurling stones at the trio and beating them up, said the source. In the middle of this melee, one among the US nationals escaped from the place. When the information reached them, the Thoothukudi Central Police sent a team to the spot. They rescued the duo and admitted them to Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. The two US nationals were identified as Russel Lpay (48) and John Douglas (47) from California, district police superintendent J Rajendran told Express. They were sailors in a cargo vessel that had docked at the Thoothukudi port, he added. “Perhaps it was not a wrong thing in their country, they greeted our people in a similar way. But the locals opposed this and beat them up,” added the SP.Two cases, one based on a complaint from the public and another from the injured US nationals, were registered and the Thoothukudi Central police are investigating.
