Allahabad: Taking serious note of the outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh, which has claimed many lives this year, the Allahabad High Court on Monday directed the concerned officials to submit a report regarding the steps taken to prevent spread of the disease before it by October 20.
The order was passed by Justice Sunil Ambawani on a contempt application filed by Rajesh Kumar Srivastava who had alleged that despite earlier directions issued by the court, the state government had failed to take adequate steps to curb the outbreak of the disease which had caused "many deaths and is not less than a national emergency".
The court also ordered that a meeting of experts be convened at New Delhi in the next 15 days to chalk out an effective strategy.
The court said the meeting shall be attended among others by the Director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme run by the Centre, joint secretary of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directors General of Medical Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education of Uttar Pradesh as well as the Principal of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, where most of the Japanese Encephalitis patients are being referred.
