Barely five days after a couple eloped and got married, the 24-year-old wife died in a road accident while her civil engineer husband sustained severe injuries when a concrete mixer hit their two-wheeler from behind near Anna University on Sunday.
Police said Prakash (24) of Pallavaram was on his way to the Marina Beach with his wife Priya alias Meena on a two-wheeler around 7.15 am when a speeding concrete mixer hit their vehicle from behind at the Gandhi Mandapam flyover. The engineer lost control of his vehicle and both fell off the vehicle. They were rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where Priya died. Prakash was undergoing treatment.
Adyar Traffic investigation registered a case. They arrested Karuppasamy (25) of Sengottai, the driver of the concrete mixer vehicle, which was on its way to Thiruvanmiyur after finishing work near Guindy.
Man hacked to death at Pudupet
A 28-year-old horseman was hacked to death at Pudupet on Sunday night. Police said Appu (28) of South Coovum River Road, was hacked to death by a three-member gang that arrived in a two-wheeler when the victim was sitting on the road near his house along with a relative. The gang allegedly got off the vehicle, identified him and murdered him while his relative escaped from the scene. Police said the man owned a horse and offered rides on Marina Beach.
Mechanic succumbs to burn injuries
A mechanic, who was among the five injured in a fire allegedly caused due to a leak in an LPG cylinder at Chromepet, succumbed to injuries on Sunday. Police said Kannan, a mechanic living in Kothandam Nagar, died on Sunday morning at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for burns. The incident that took place on Friday evening in the house of Manimaran and Pushpavathi. Kannan was summoned to the house to test the domestic LPG cylinder supplied by a local gas agency for leakage. The mechanic allegedly lit a matchstick while testing, sparking off an explosion.
